There Is an I in Team
We often tend to generalize what personality style is required for a certain job. If I describe certain jobs, in your mind’s eye you start to form an idea or image of how those employees behave. How would you describe someone in sales? Driven and outgoing. Accounting? Data-oriented and introverted. But what would happen if everyone in a department had the same personality style? Perhaps there would be less conflict and maybe everyone would even be friends, however, there are shortfalls to having unbalanced teams.
Team dynamics are the behavioral relationships between the members of any team.
How effectively a team can communicate, interact, and work together is the difference between reaching and surpassing goals or remaining stagnant and complacent. A team leader can help affect change within a stagnant team through team-building exercises and activities, but ultimately the responsibility for change must be affected by each individual. For a team to truly be fully functional, you need to understand how everyone behaves, to better organize, and rally the team.
At Engagement Academy Partners, we recommend that team members understand their individual personality styles. We utilize the Take Flight with DISC approach because it is the most “brain-friendly” method for employees to understand their behaviors as well as the behaviors of their co-workers.
For a team to be fully effective, it is important to understand aspects such as how to best delegate to each other and how we like to send and receive information. Once you fully understand your own style, it then sheds a light on how others prefer to operate.
When we “flex” to be more mindful and inclusive of our teammates, then the team dynamics will improve.
So, is your sales team not reaching its full earning potential? Maybe they need to explore their motivational and follow-through styles. Is the accounting team is taking too long to submit numbers? Perhaps they need to understand the urgency. It is important also to not lay blame on anyone for a team not performing its best. We want to move away from judgment and move towards understanding why individuals act the way they do. In doing this, we will tend to react better to others. And with better understanding comes more trust, respect, and in turn, really valuing the other members of your team.
During a four-hour training, we
- explain the different style types, the behavioral structure of the team,
- identify strengths and weaknesses of the team, and
- offer practical solutions to everyday work issues.
Individualized corporate training can be conducted directly with Engagement Academy Partners or in conjunction with the University of South Florida’s Corporate Training and Professional Education division.
