Disaster Happens
Strategic Plans & Viability
I just spent forty-five minutes searching online to discover where I can get the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine is open for my age group in Florida and I’m trying to be proactive and plan. I get a flu shot every year because I have a history of pneumonia. There is no guarantee that I will become ill, but if I can mitigate some of the risk, I will do it.
I do not believe that anyone thought that this is where we would be this time last year. We all knew that pandemics could happen, sure, they happened before in movies and reality. These are modern times though and we have technology, advanced medications, and modern hygiene. Yet, we find ourselves in these unprecedented times.
Workers were sent home. Weeks turned into months with quarantine, face masks, social distancing, no school, virtual school, virtual work, hybrid settings, work from home, cancelled projects, layoffs, closed restaurants, and empty storefronts. Offices are no longer needed because people are working from home. Clothing stores are going out of business because office wear is irrelevant. Newscasters are letting us into their homes and we see pets and children on conference calls. Zoom fatigue.
All this brings me to my point. How prepared was your business for the pandemic?
In project management, we always try our best to be proactive and prepared. Even in all my years of dealing with public education we did the same. When I worked in IT – especially with departments of emergency management – strategic plans were of vital importance. In most aspects of life, no matter what vocation, there are levels of uncertainty.
Are there vaccines for businesses? In a way yes – strategic plans and risk management.
Disasters happen. We tend to underinvest for disaster potential. We procrastinate when it comes to future unknowns and instead spend on more immediate concerns. Well, now, dealing with our so-called new normal is an immediate concern and, more than likely, quite costly.
